It is the fourth day at sea. Johannes and I are sitting at the usual corner table in the dining room. We are the last to go in. Johannes would like to go in earlier. I ask him to wait. I look for the officer. He is not there. My father’s friend is already sitting there with his wife. And has been for years, it seems. Like the pastor and his wife. He paraded so very tall during the Guild procession. Severe and sensual. The tiny posy of flowers on the tables is delicate. They cannot find the rolling of the ship agreeable. Flowers, even cut flowers, would perhaps like to stay in a vase on dry land.
